When an 1865 Colonial Revival in Winchester, Massachusetts became available for sale twenty years ago, designer Jackie Whalen fell in love at first sight. She admits to a weakness for old houses that need serious attention, and she knew she had found a diamond in the rough. The home also came with an interesting history, as it was once joined to the neighboring home. It was split into two homes in 1916 with identical layouts, most likely once connected by a double-sided staircase.
When Jackie and her family moved in, there was no time for a major overhaul. Instead, they did a cosmetic fix and concentrated on pressing issues, like modernizing the systems and repairing the slate roof. Over the years, the regal home received a head to toe renovation creating a welcoming, gracious, and comfortable oasis for family and friends. Today’s tour was originally featured in the January/February 2016 issue of New England Home.
