Recently featured in House & Garden, this Hampshire house dates back six centuries. Wow! As the result of adaptations over hundreds of years, many of Britain’s old houses are amalgams of periods and styles, and this one combines parts of a Tudor cottage, a Georgian mansion, and a little Victorian house. The present owners commissioned architect Elspeth Beard to gently modernize the house while respecting its past. They wanted an “old-fashioned English house – livable and comfortable, but also simple and functional.”
The interior had become choppy over the past 50 years with areas partitioned off to create smaller rooms, and because it is listed, Beard worked closely with planners and conservation departments to create a more simplified layout. To give the house an established feel and add personality, the owners turned to Sarah Morris of McWhirter Morris. Morris integrated antique furniture throughout the house along with fabrics from Robert Kime and Colefax and Fowler where she worked for 17 years.
Interestingly, an expired real estate listing for the house popped up in my Pinterest feed over the weekend. I cannot imagine ever letting this home go! Let’s take a tour with images from House & Garden and the real estate listing.

I just love this house! Do you have a favorite room? Mine might be the romantic bedroom with canopy bed. You can learn more by visiting House & Garden and the real estate listing. And to see my all-time favorite English Country home, please click here.

Magnificent!
Sorry, this looks to me far more like an American house attempting to look English, than a true English country house. They got the bedrooms right, but not the leaving areas. And that kitchen! Talk about bad design! It has an enormous “barrier island”, separating the sink, stove and refrigerator. Pretty, but it won’t function well at all..
The dining room reminds me of a Mario Praz watercolor…
I love it! Wish I lived there! I could see myself in the beautiful thatched cottage as well. Thank you for sharing it!
